Story 11

Tree that has been Cherished and Overgrown
Atsuta Shrine, one of Japan’s three major shrines, is located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The camphor tree (kusunoki) we acquired was growing in the outer grounds of the shrine. The trees within the shrine’s grounds have been carefully maintained and selected, with their growth closely watched. However, as the camphor tree grew too large and began to extend into the road, it was pruned. Typically, trees pruned within the shrine grounds are returned to nature, but with support for this project, we were able to use a portion of the wood.
