「困った木」で作る 時木の積層

愛知県名古屋市にある日本三大神宮のひとつ、熱田神宮。その敷地内に、旧大宮司・千秋家のマツの大木を使用したことに由来する建物があります。その横で生えていたマツの剪定した一部を今回取得しました。これまでこのマツは大切に保存するために建物側の軒先を切り欠くという対処まで施されていました。しかし、生長しすぎて台風や大風により建物自体を損壊させてしまう恐れが高くなったため、剪定へと至りました。通常、神宮内で剪定された木は境内で自然に還していますが、今回のプロジェクトに賛同いただき、その一部を使わせてもらうことになりました。御神木というように、神社では大切にされてきた木がたくさん生えています。木の成長を優先するだけではなく、成長にあわせた的確な剪定、管理も重要であることにも気付かされます。

Tree that Buildings can No Longer Avoid

Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s three major shrines, is home to a building that is said to be made from an ancient pine tree planted by Minamoto no Yoritomo. While this tree holds great historical significance, we acquired a portion of a pine tree that grew next to it and was pruned. Over the years, this pine had grown too large, leading to the eaves of the building being notched to accommodate its growth, and eventually, it required pruning. Typically, trees pruned within the shrine grounds are returned to nature, but with support for this project, we were able to use a portion of this wood.
Just as sacred trees (shinboku) are revered within shrines, this project highlights the importance of not only prioritizing a tree’s growth but also making thoughtful, timely pruning and management decisions to ensure healthy, sustainable growth.
