Story 13

Tree that could not be Veneer
Katagiri Meiboku Kogyo, based in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, operates under the principle of “proposing a wood culture that is kind to the environment.” They sell and process natural woods such as Kiso cypress and other fine woods, as well as plantation wood, for use in both traditional and modern building materials, structural materials, furniture, and exterior materials.
Among their specialties is the manufacturing and veneering of tsukiita (thin wood veneers), a process in which they excel, not only in terms of appearance but also in enhancing functional aspects like fire resistance. Even when making furniture from fine woods, scrap pieces inevitably arise. In the case of tsukiita, a “core” section of the wood often remains, and it is from this that we acquired a portion. With the fine wood involved, we hope that various creative uses for it will emerge in the future.
