Story 17

Tree that failed to become a commodity
Kihara Mokuzai, a specialized store located in Taka, Hyogo Prefecture, focuses on processed thinning wood products and civil engineering wood materials. The store specializes in round pole processing, such as scaffold poles and wooden fences. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for creating holes in the center of cylindrical wood, for purposes such as inserting iron rods or promoting wood drying. To meet this need, they have introduced specialized machines like “nakaguri” (center drilling) and “shinnuki” (core removal) machines. During the testing process of these machines, some logs had misaligned holes, making them unsuitable for use as materials. Some of these logs were acquired by the user. Even though these logs were not used in final products, they serve as a positive presence, showcasing new techniques and the potential future of wood utilization.
